LUNCH TIME POLL - HELL WEEK

Dawn Boyle

It's that time of year for us here in New York. It is ELA's this week, which are the State Tests given to elementary school children. When I was younger we had the IOWA Examinations. I remember them being no big deal. Now a days an entire school year is based on the ELA'S alone.

The pressure we put on our students and on the teacher is ridiculous. I have a few friends that their kids were a bundle of nerves for these tests. I have told my kids from the beginning that all they have to do is their best, it is no baring on their actual grade at all.

It is Hell Week for you?
Does every school participate in some kind of State testing?
Do you feel that these tests are completely useless?

Share your thoughts with us!

REST IN PEACE LITTLE ANGEL

Dawn Boyle

I teach a small group of children religion. We meet once a week from September through April. My class of kids happens to be children of my friends. We have been together as a group for 3 years. We are there for each other when someone needs a ride to class, we celebrate the joys of a new baby coming into someone's family, the holidays and have also dealt with the loss of a grandparent. We have an amazing little group of now 10 year olds.

I will never forget the day when a parent was dropping off their child and was obviously very upset. She had just learned that her nephew was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, which is a rare form of cancer that affects children. That day started our days of prayer. We offered up every class to our classmate Barbara's cousin Kyle. We participated in fund raisers and dedicated our Walk-A-Thon to Kyle and his cause, which landed our picture in the church bulletin.

We learned that only 30 percent of children that are diagnosed survive because there is little money spent on research. Neuroblastoma is the leading cause of death of children under 18 by disease.

I have been receiving emails from an outstanding site that allowed the family of Kyle to make updates about his progress. Their story was so incredible. I read about triumphs and doctors visits, about time spent with family and his best friend, I also read this morning about his passing.

Today I sent an email out to my class and their families with the sad news of Kyle's passing and it made me think what could we do to honor Kyle? I decided that it would be best to spread the word about Neuroblastoma, and let my friends and readers know about this horrible disease that is not getting enough funding or attention. Please see the link below about Kyle, about donating in his honor and to finding the cure for Neuroblastoma.

TAKE MY BREATH AWAY - NO MORE

Dawn Boyle
I go through bouts of insomnia, usually due to stress. I find myself up at night watching old movies. I usually fall asleep before it's over. The other night I woke up about 1:30 and couldn't get back to bed. I flipped through all 7,000 channels. NOTHING...I looked through all the On Demand, again NOTHING. I started surfing again and found Top Gun. It started to make me think, what happened to Tom Cruise.

I was madly in love with him in his Top Gun, Risky Business Days. Still loved him in Cocktail and faintly remember All the Right Moves. But it made me wonder why this "GOD" of my youth was the least of my favorites as and adult. How and why did my taste change so much?

He still has that wicked killer smile and is very handsome, but he lost me when he married Nicole Kidman. Remember that freakishly odd movie they did together? What was it called...Eyes Wide Shut. Talk about BIZARRE! Then when he started jumping couches and ripping Brooke Shields a new one, I was physically repulsed by him. For some reason I was totally over Tom Cruise. In fact if I was given a "MOVIE STAR PASS" and my choice had to be Tom Cruise...I would not take it! I guess the L. Ron Hubbard, Katie Holmes, Suri, Tom is not my ideal anymore. I am pretty sure he is not Katie's anymore either. I bet she wishes she stayed with Chris Klein...LIVE AND LEARN!

I was also in love with a few of the other OUTSIDERS....no other repulses me as much as Tommy. How about you? Oh and I still have dreams of waking up one day and looking like Diane Lane.

Recognize any of these young Greasers? Director Francis Ford Coppola was on to something when he made his 1983 drama 'The Outsiders,' based on S.E. Hinton's beloved teen novel: From a cast filled with young, little-known actors, nearly all went on to success and stardom. Read on to find out who's faded from the spotlight and who, like main character Ponyboy, has managed to stay gold.

THE PET PYTHON

Marion Pellicano Ambrose

Jose is from the Philippines. He moved to the US when he was 16 years old. There are many things he forgets about his native land, but there is one story he will remember until the day he dies: The story of his cousin Skye.

Skye was young, single and independent. She was what you would also call eccentric. She loved living close to nature and she especially loved snakes. She loved them so much that when she found a baby Python in a local pet store, she decided to buy it and keep it as a pet. She adored her little snake, and fed it only the choicest morsels: first tiny mice then larger rats as the Python grew. Skye allowed the snake to sleep in her bed. It curled up in a coil next to her for warmth and she felt that it showed her true affection. As time went on, she and her Python seemed quite content.

One day Skye woke up to find her 6 foot Python stretched out against her body. “He must be cold” she thought, and put another blanket on the bed. After that he stopped eating. Days went by and he often repeated the behavior of stretching out against her, and still would not eat.

Finally, she decided to call the vet fearing her beloved pet was ill. The Vet had an answer for her right away.  “Get away from the Python and call animal control to come and take it away in a cage.”
Skye couldn’t believe her ears. “Why?” she asked. “This is my pet. I love him.”
“Because,” answered the vet, “He’s stretching against you to size you up. He stopped eating because you will be a large meal that will nourish him for weeks and he has to make room for you! He’s getting ready to eat you Skye!”

Animal Control arrived within the hour and took the python away. As far as Jose knows, Skye is still young, single, independent, and has no pets whatsoever!

WANNA LAUGH?!?!?!

Tony Walker

Boyle was shopping at the grocery store last week getting ready for Easter. She was picking through the turkeys but couldn't find one big enough for all the family that was getting together for the holiday.
She asks a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?
"No maam, they're dead."

HE SAID....

Tony Walker

There is a guy I know who is a local musician here on Long Island. He plays in many bands. I've known this guy for around 20 years. This guy is a jerk. Pompous and rude.  By coincidence my wife knew this guy before my wife and I knew each other. She used to see him play in a band.

Here's the reason this fits into a He Said Post.... my wife agrees that this guy is a jerk and she thinks he is pretty ugly BUT she is attracted to him because he plays in a band!!!  WTF??!!!  I know plenty of women who think that way about someone. "He's sexy because he's up on stage!" WHAT??? He's sexy because he is holding a guitar??? He's sexy because he's singing some top forty song that he actually doesn't even like??

Can you ladies explain this to me???

There are plenty of guys who can't sing but are the nicest guys in the world! But the jerk gets the girl because he holds a guitar?

What about the guy swinging a hammer?
What about the guy driving a truck?
What about the guy doing comedy?? (That last one is me. I want groupies damnit!!! LOL)

STICKY SWEET

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
Patty B

"Warning: I have PMS and I'm all out of chocolate."

"The world would be a better place if everyone was as sweet as Chocolate."

"If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly."

"God sends no stress that prayer and chocolate cannot handle!"

LUNCH TIME POLL - Party of Three

Jillian B Hart

A 'threesome" is something many fantasize about.  Perhaps many more then are even willing to admit  to thinking about it.  A threesome is NOT like regular sex.  It will require trust, imagination and sensitivity.

Is it something you really want? How do you get your lover to agree?
If agreeing to cross this line...
Are there rules?
Limits?
How would comfort, trust, and respect factor in?
What about jealousy?
Would you give as much as you want to get?
Can a threesome really be just pleasure and experimentation or will it permanently alter your relationship forever?
Is this different for a man and a woman?

If you were to invite someone else into your bedroom with you and your lover, how would the ménage à trois add up?

FFF- All ladies...
FFM - Two girls & a guy
MMF - Two guys & a girl
MMM - Men's club, no girls allowed

The Good Girl's Weight Loss Secret

A couple of years ago I lost about 15 pounds. It was a noticeable weight loss on my 5'4" frame. I lost count of how often I was asked how I did it. I usually vaguely replied that I had been sick with some stomach thing. Secretly I was tempted to give them the actual reason and say it in my chirpiest voice: "Why, it's crippling depression....but I don't recommend it for everyone." There was an irony that the time in my life when I got the most compliments was also the darkest. Friends, acquaintances and even strangers seemed almost eager to tell me how great I looked.

At any other time fitting into a smaller size would have made me very happy. However, I was the most miserable that I had ever been in my life. My marriage fell apart as we were approaching our tenth anniversary. I went into a depression that seemed to envelope me. Every day was endless and insurmountable. Everything seemed meaningless, especially food. I just couldn't eat. My appetite was gone. I lost weight without intending to. Spend entire weekends in bed without hardly getting up and exist on an English muffin a day and you can, too. Not the right way to shed pounds by any stretch of the imagination.

I read with interest Barbara's very honest posting of struggling to make sense of why bad things happen (What Matters). Her faith gave her the strength to see that sometimes life doesn't make sense and there's no logic with tragedy. My experience showed me that some times life can just suck. And then when you think it can't suck any worse, somehow it does. I would feel like I had fought my way out of a deep dark hole only to have the ground give out underneath me and fall right back down.

It took a long time to fight my way back to "normal." I discovered a strength and support system I didn't know I had. It still moves me to tears the compassion I found in my friends and family.

The weight came back on eventually, plus a little more. And I was okay with it. I thought it was part of the healing process, proof I was getting better. My emotional health seemed more important than my jean size. It's a lesson I always keep close to remind myself when weight concerns creep in. We are so much more than the numbers on the bathroom scale or on our clothes. Those numbers don't define us, don't represent who we truly are. Where our bodies curve or don't curve doesn't reflect what is in our hearts and in our minds. Numbers are only important if we make them. My happiness doesn't depend on my waist size. It comes from within and no arbitrary number should take that away.
