If you grew up in the 80's you will certainly remember the latest fad about to hit elementary schools near you...Friendship Pins.
About a week ago my older daughter was begging me to take her to Michaels (local craft store) to use a gift card she received for her birthday. She was in search of beads and safety pins. I chuckled thinking how these kids find this so original. I told her about growing up and having them all over the laces of my shoes, on the pockets of my jeans jacket and of course on my backpack. For that fleeting moment in time I think she actually thought I was cool....it passed as soon as I told her I was not springing for the deluxe bead kit for $39.00. We opted for a scaled down version and grabbed a box of multi sized safety pins.
I went on to explain to them if you were a proud recipient of a coveted friendship pin, you proudly displayed it, but there were always those girls that didn’t have close enough friends to be given friendship pins. . .sad, but when that happened, they just made some for their own shoes so that they didn’t get left out. I made this a little learning experience for them and explained that Friendship Pins didn't have to be only for "BEST FRIENDS", they are to be shared with all the girls you know.
Since we bought the kits, my kids have spent hours together (not fighting) making pins so they are ready to share them with their buddies when school begins.
It's nice to see them reliving something I used to do....next thing they will be asking for is Swatch Watches for Christmas! I just googled them and they are MUCH MORE then the $30 each in the 80's! Start Stocking Up NOW!!!
Great blast from the past! Perhaps I should start studding some denim jackets. The one I can wear again - I studded myself and it's VINTAGE 1986! HA! ;)
