This week's He Said is actually agreeing with Boyle's She Said.
Why the hell do our kids have freakin homework during the summer???
Sorry.... I disagree that our kids need to read & keep up with the academics during the summer.
Our kids need time to be kids damnit!
There are exceptions of course... my daughter goes to a summer program where some light academics is involved. But she loves it because all of her classmates from the school year are there. Kids like my daughter don't have many play dates or friends for that matter. All they have are each other so the summer program is almost a social event for them.
But typically I think it's wrong to shove so much work down our kids throats.
The following is an excerpt from John Lennon's Working Class Hero. I think these words fit more today than ever before.
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Here is a true tale of two students, both were excited and enthusiastic about their training. One came three times a week and the other came every other week. Guess who finished the course in record time? The three time a week student finished in 70 hours and the every other week student took 110 hours.
ReplyDeleteThe moral is use it or loose it. Maybe not all of it, but studies show when you don't use something, brain, muscle, or tool, they get rusty and degrade. So have your kids practice those things they are learning in school and they will be sharp tools instead of dull. If you do it with them you'll stay sharp too ;)
Like Dawn said in her post... her girls read anyway. My kids read too. Most kids read something whether it's a baseball magazine, a book about a video game, they even read when they're on the internet.
ReplyDeleteMy point is why does everything have to be so regimented? The very second you tell the kids during the summer that they have to do something for school everything turns to shit.
I agree.... use it or LOSE it. But give them their down time too. There is nothing wrong with doing something mindless or sometimes doing nothing at all. Believe me, I am a master of it!
