HE SAID... DO YOU HAVE A "ONE THAT GOT AWAY"?

TONY WALKER
This week's He Said asks a question.... how many of you have a "one who got away?"

I was talking to a dear friend.... she was telling me about a guy. She's known this guy was "the one" since 1986. But he got away. To this day they both say they still have feelings for each other & realize, despite happy lives, they missed the boat.

My friend said she misses him so much & sometimes has a hard time with it. Meanwhile he appears to be fine with it... or so she thinks.

I spoke to a buddy of mine, a guy, who told me a long long time ago about his "one who got away." This buddy agreed women appear to have a harder time with this kind of situation... again, they appear to have a harder time.... my buddy says the men have just as hard a time as the women, the men just hide it better. My buddy really opened up to me about how he longs for his soulmate, his "one that got away". He has a good life-a wife and kids-but he feels a connection, a love for his "one." He claims his "one" feels the same. They've felt this way since 1987 & still talk about it to this day!

I know a few other people who claim they're the victims of "the one who got away." They all have different reasons why "the one" got away.... fights, religious, financial, jobs, family, etc. Yet, years later, they still yearn for that person. Now with the power of Facebook, many of these "ones" are finding their way back. Problem is, most of the ones I know are married people having affairs.

This got me thinking.... are these people really missing "the one" or are they in love with a memory? A what might have been notion? Has life hit them & their spouse so hard that they think of an earlier time & associate someone from that earlier time which turns them into "the one?" But, then... take the two friends I am talking about... they've never stopped loving their "one" since the eighties!! So are there a ton of people out there who have let "the one" get away? Just like that movie "The Notebook."

If you have let that "one" get away, why don't you go get that person? Isn't your happiness more important than anything else?

Tell us what you think...
Are you in this kind of situation? Why don't you drop everything & start a life with "the one?"
Do you think Facebook is enhancing people's temptations?

UNTHINK... WHO WOULDA THUNK IT?!

Barbara Ward-Finneran
I know I'm beyond busy with the laundry list of jobs that make up my status as bread winner for my family. But, I must be living under a rock when I'm not working, hanging with my kiddos, or sleeping, because until yesterday I hadn't ever heard of "Unthink".  Ironically I "heard" about it on Facebook - read about it in a post that someone was setting up a "Like" page at Unthink.  Even more surprising was the way it was "billed" (and seemingly marketed as) --- the "Anti-Facebook".  SERIOUSLY?  I had to google search and read on. And, it is out there in the search engines as "Anti-Facebook".  Am I the only one in the dark, to this step beyond google + to a social network that is all about NOT being Facebook.  Funny - would they exist without their supposed antagonist?  Seems more like a modern day Frie-nemy to me.

Apparently this new social networking platform has already made quite an impression.  Boasting over 100,000 register users, despite initial  traffic and crashing issues. Users set up "suites" which contain both public, professional, and private information. On the net you can find that Alexia’s statistics, which report a 14,800% increase in traffic over the past 7 days alone. (Posted November 1st). Rachael Vicari, Unthink COO, was quoted saying "the company was unprepared for the amount of traffic it saw".

Growth like that is impressive.  I think the numbers will tell more truths when one checks back at the quarterly marks as they project throughout the year.  Unthink has secured 2.5 million in funding from DouglasBay (is a value investor, who claim to see opportunities where others don't). Apparently DouglasBay seems to think Unthink may have what it takes, as they have publicly claims to have a 21% share in the site.

Has having the confidence to take on Facebook from the get go caused this Tampa based start up to become the next best thing? Or will curiosity of those who are over the Facebook changes and updates simply make them a flash in the pan before returning to the old standard?

So, DRL readers, h
ad you even heard of it or did you read it here first?
What do you think about Unthink????

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH; FROM DARKNESS AND DESPAIR - Doris' Story

Cancer is a wicked, wicked disease... Kudos to all those involved in this project and the others like them that spread faith, courage and hope to so many. Survivors are a special kind of HERO. In honor of all those HEROS that all of us know and love, Delayed Reaction Lounge proudly re-posts Doris' story from last Spring.  Ladies... Don't put it off - schedule you mammogram today.

GETTING IT BACK

Doris Jelinek

Ever feel like you are in a dream....everything is wonderful and suddenly you look up and there is a mac truck in your face? That is how I felt when I woke up from my breast biopsy back in Sept 2000.  My life was wonderful. I had three adorable kids who were the light of my life Tim 6, Matt 4 and Holly 2, and a great husband, Keith. The biggest thing I worried about was what kind of pancakes the kids and I were going to make that day, or what park we were going to head out to. Over a series of months I had noticed a chain of small lumps in my right breast develop  and thought for sure they were cysts. It was the breast surgeon that I finally saw that saved my life, Dr David Kaufman. Because my breast were dense at  32 years old, the lumps did not show up on the mammo and he insisted that I have them biopsied. I fought this idea. I was so busy with my kids and did not want to take the time to be in the hospital for a day. I also somehow thought that because I had such small breasts there was no way it would be cancer. Almost annoyed with having to do this procedure I dragged myself there. When I awoke from the anesthesia all I could see was the worried face of Dr Kaufman and the words I could not comprehend "Doris it is cancer, you have to come back tomorrow for a mastectomy"........Cancer? I didn't know anyone who had cancer. I did not have any of the risk factors. Had all three kids under thirty, breast fed them all, never on the pill, no family history, 32 years old. Are you kidding me????. "Fine"....I said to myself. I came home I looked my breast in the mirror, thanked it for nursing my three kids and serving me well....and said "goodbye".

COLLEGE BAKE SALE RACIST AND SEXIST?

Marion Pellicano Ambrose
I read the following post on Yahoo News. Almost as interesting as the article were the comments that followed. I wondered how our DRL readers would react. What do you think? Please consider a comment here!

A California students' group has sparked a racism and sexism row over plans for a bake sale in which people are charged according to their ethnic background and gender.

Campus Republicans at the University of California, Berkeley say critics have overreacted to their event planned for this week, which they insist is a protest over affirmative action.

The group's Facebook page lists the price of baked goods at the sale according to race: $2 for whites, $1.50 for Asians, $1 for Hispanics, $0.75 for blacks and $0.25 for Native Americans.

"$0.25 FOR ALL WOMEN!" it added.

Campus Republican President Shawn Lewis said the idea of the "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" was to highlight a legislative bill to let California public universities consider race and gender in their admissions process.

He said they planned to go ahead with the sale on Tuesday despite protests and threats. "We didn't expect the volume, the amount of response that we got," he told CNN.

"In the first few hours, hundreds of posts on our Facebook page. And the tone of some of the responses -- we expected people to be upset. We didn't expect personal threats to be made.

"They were implicit and explicit threats made to the organizers of the event, from burning down the table to throwing our baked goods at us and other kinds of physical threats."

But the famous US college's student Democrats president Anais LaVoie has asked for an apology.

Pure genius !!!!

It's okay for universities and employers to do exactly that but not okay at the bake sale? Maybe if they just call it a Diversity Bake Sale no one would complain. That's how the Universities and Companies do it.

Well, it certainly proved one thing: people sure are sensitive these days.

The truth aggravates the liars and uninformed. I thought some famous person once said something about his kids being judged by their character and not their color of their skin. Probably some white racist guy I bet!

I applaud these people for showing up the absurdity of what AA has morphed into. It's really sad how America has become a place obsessed with race and gender........rather than ability, talent and qualifications........

All the white men will be sitting in the car and the women will do the buying of the goodies! That would work for me! And i am white,by the way!

The truth is a painful thing isn't it? Those students should be applauded for exposing the perennial stupidity of political correctness and leftist nanny-state social engineering that has brainwashed millions worldwide. That thinking is not of the people comrade!

Many seem to be missing the point that it is a racially inspired piece of legislation that they are parodying. The legislation is racist and the parody is a potent political tool.
Get some insight and maybe a sense of humor.

LUNCH TIME POLL

ABC news recently reported that 5% of children under the age of two now have a Facebook page.  There are also documented pages for unborn children created by their parents.  A playful way for parents to keep friends and family up to date on pregnancy and toddler news or an invitation to trouble?

"According to recent polls, over 7.5 million American kids are under age 13 have Facebook pages, and over five million are under age ten. The New York Times reported in March of this year that 3.6 million of Facebook's 153 million monthly visitors in the U.S. are under 12."

Minors of all ages are all over the pages of this world dominating social network. They are exposed to fun games and tons of harmless fun as well as adult level conversations, posts and jokes.  Are minor children capable of handling the social situations and dangers present on social networking sites?

Social networking is here to stay.  Many parents are in denial or due to lack of know how are not actively participating in their kids internet usage. Kids are going to make mistakes and it is the responsibility of the adults in a household to monitor the internet use in their home.

At what age do you think social networking is appropriate?

Do you have minor children on Facebook?

Do you monitor their internet activity, social networking related or otherwise?

Editor's Note: Facebook's Official Policy:
http://www.facebook.com/policy.php

"If you are under 13, please do not attempt to register for Facebook or send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address. No one under age 13 may provide any personal information to or on Facebook. In the event that we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. If you believe that we might have any information from or about a child under 13, please contact us at

Facebook adds:
"We recommend that minors over the age of 13 ask their parents for permission before sending any information about themselves to anyone over the Internet."

POST HOLIDAY RE-RUN: What Matters?

Barbara Ward-Finneran

What Matters? What really matters?  What matters today and right now, can change in an instant.  No matter how hard you try to live a good life, follow your conscience and consistently do the right thing, bad things happen to good people.  We have personal failures, relationships implode, people get sick, suffer and die, people die tragically, accidents happen, disabilities exist, people disappoint us, hearts get broken, jobs are lost, finances go to ruin, foreclosures run a muck, the list goes on and on.  WHY?  WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE?

Life can be trudging along of so happily and then in an instant the life that you knew and embraced ceases to exist.  My first taste of this was when my grandfather died.  I was twenty-three at the time and it was the biggest loss of my life.  Little did I know at the time that it was nothing in comparison to what would follow about 18 months later, a few days after my wedding shower, when my Dad went to sleep and never woke up.  The shock was so horrifying

POST HOLIDAY RE-RUN: Jillian Hart

IF I COULD WAKE UP DREAMING

Ms. Jillian B. Hart

He will forever be the one that got away.  The one that slipped through her fingers.  The thing that movies are made about and that words are helpless to describe.  The emotion that has to be felt to be known.  Felt to be understood - and feeling it, only leaves the soul hungry for more.
A love that was so right - it was almost incomprehensible and seemingly was always just within their reach.  The awe of it being unnerving, until it became unattainable.  She didn’t find someone that she love that much only to let it go.  She held onto it.  Even all those years that he was gone, all those years her life went on, knowing the love never left her.  The memory of it dwelled within the fibers of her being.  It became part of who she was and she was never quite the same.  It always existed, locked away in her heart like a box with a missing key.

LUNCH TIME POLL

POST HOLIDAY RE-RUN

Today's Lunch Time Poll is more of a "topic" then a "question"...
Can an innocent flirtation be healthy?

According to one law firm, over 20 percent of new divorce petitions contain references to Facebook.

Which is more forgivable an emotional affair, a sexual affair, or a one night stand?

Can a relationship truly recover from any of the above?

The new trend in some relationships seem to be steering bored or broken marriages, or long term relationships,  to be "open". Is it even a marriage anymore once that step has been taken?

How many people in this world of social networking have had this happen to them or a "friend"?

YOU'RE MY INSPIRATION....

JENN COPP

One night I was at a mortgage companies Christmas party. The room was full of amazing people and a lot of Realtors. At the time I was a recruiter and I scanned the room. In the corner of the room their was a girl. She had a smile on her face and she was full of energy. With all I have gone through in the past two years and the sense of spirit I had lost from my cancer diagnosis, I was drawn to her. She reminded me of myself. It  was an instant bond talking to her, I had a business .. She had a business .. I was in real estate, so was she. With the power of Facebook I have followed her since Christmas. We comment on each other's posts, I love reading hers. I can tell we are in the same worlds  - ALWAYS BUSY! What I have learned about her is that she is one amazing girl. It started off with her devotion to a little boy who is sick. He was collecting Band aids. All I saw was a devotion and drive for her  to collect as many band aids as possible. She had Band aids being sent from every possible location. It was truly amazing. I can go on about her posts and the dedication she has to various charities, but I think you get the picture.

Tonight I posted about me getting ready for all my doctor appointments this week, I try to act like I am only going to the dentist. It is scary to think after one doctor appointment you can find out you have cancer, and your life is changed !!! Well didn't surprise me in the least, knowing her character that within a second  I got an inbox asking, are you okay? How much those three words mean to me I can't express. In a world that is so closed and everyone is worried about putting themselves out there, here is a girl that didn't even have to think about it. So I say to you, you are one amazing person, your kindness, generosity, and love of Life touches so many people! I have a GREAT family, I have GREAT friends and I have GREAT inspirations on Facebook!

I MEAN WICKED AS IN; MEAN, UGLY, NEGATIVE.

Tony Walker

Wicked Wednesday. How fitting. My question to you is why do people have to be so wicked? Unfortunately in this case the word wicked is not meant to be hot or sexy, the way I prefer to use the word.

In this case I mean wicked as in wicked witch. Mean. Ugly. Negative.

Why do people feel the need to go out of their way to be mean? I don't know about you but from my viewpoint most people take the time to be wicked & mean than they do to be nice. Meanwhile it takes so much more energy to be wicked & mean.  So you called an ex friend, lover, or whoever all sorts of names, attacked something they did, & made fun of them. Did it make you feel any better? Did the ex friend, lover, or whoever stop & say, "Yes you're right. I am all of those things. I am going to change right this second. Thanks for the enlightenment?" What really came out of it?

"Business" Trip - Part I

Ms. Jillian B. Hart

A Business Trip... Somewhere in Beacon Hill...

He glances at a text that instantly creates arousal and intrigue.
"Where can I meet you?"
His eyes blur the words on the screen as his mind jumps from thought to thought wondering if it is a text game or if an open invitation has now been engraved.
The desire to respond must be calculated by the need to be professional, work day doesn't end for a few hours. A little while later, before the opportunity to text back arrives... his pocket vibrates again.... signaling another text message.
Her again.  "Or shall I send you clues on where to find me?"
It took nothing to picture her smile as she typed the words or the gleam and sparkle in her eyes as she pressed send. Just the right mixture of impatience and enticement.  His mind now racing around with the finishing thought being, she's here.

FOR ME, IT'S MY LITTLE GIRL

Tony Walker

Almost everyone has a connection to someone with autism whether it's a family member or the family member of a close friend. For me it's my little girl Sami.
Sami will be 12 in a week and a half. She is very high functioning for someone with autism so the past 2 years or so Sami's become aware that she is different from most of the other kids around her. Recently we introduced the word autistic to her.  Now she's so curious about that word.  About a month ago I came across an ad in Newsday about a movie that was playing at the Huntington Arts Cinema called "Wretches & Jabberers".  It's about two men.  One in his 40's the other in his 50's, and they are both autistic. I decided to take Sami to see this movie.

BOUTIQUING WITH MARY LOU

Marion Pellicano Ambrose

I have a dear friend who has recently introduced me to the joy of “boutiquing”, as
she calls it. We have lunch and then go around checking out the “up scale” thrift stores!
Yes, I said “up scale”! In this difficult recession, so many people are in serious financial
straits. Have you notices these thrift shops popping up all over? And they seem to be
thriving!

HE SAID, SHE SAID

*Revised at 11am, with the addition of "Jenn Said"

HE SAID...
Tony Walker

Let me start this one off by saying that I am not trying to piss anyone off with this post. I seriously need to hear from you guys to educate me!

This past weekend I got into some trouble. I run a comedy troupe with a business partner who is a female. She is one of my closest friends. At every show we do I like to take pictures & video then post them on all the usual sites. This past Friday we did a show & there was a picture from it showing two cast members and a bunch of audience members. The audience members were laughing, so I said to myself, "Self, this is a good picture to post because people will see us having a good time." What I failed to notice was that one of the cast members in the photo, a female cast member, had her back to the camera so her ass is in the shot.

HE SAID....

Tony Walker

Today's post by Boyle got me thinking about my friends. Like her, I've had some major changes with some of my relationships in the past year so I've been reevaluating my friends a lot lately.
Some people think Facebook sucks, others think it's wonderful. My vote depends upon what mood you catch me in but there is one thing about Facebook that I love: I love how it brought me back to so many friends!

So many people say, "If I wanted to keep in touch with these people I would have. I don't need Facebook." While I understand that point that is not how I see it. I lost touch with many people just because of marriage, work, kids.... life! Now I've reconnected with so many friends where I find myself wondering how I lost touch with them in the first place.
What amazes me the most are my friends from high school who graduated around the same time as I did, the late eighties. I've been able to hold conversations & make jokes with these friends like no time has past. It blows me away that we've now spent more time apart than we spent together yet we have some unbreakable bond where we all know each other so well. Prior to Facebook I only kept in steady touch with 4 people from the old days & really did not think about those times all that often. Now I see a lot of old friends on a semi regular basis & I'm loving every minute of it! Being a part of the Lounge is from Boyle & I reconnecting! Just this morning, my old pal Brian & I were cast in an episode of a show on True TV because they liked a video submission we sent in. Brian is at the top of the list of people who I can't believe I lost touch with. He is like a brother to me!! Crazy stuff!
So thank you to all of my friends for being my friend!!
