THE LEGEND OF THE ACAI

Marion Pellicano Ambrose
Hundreds of years ago, a land of plenty existed in the Amazon Rainforest. A tribe of people lived there and enjoyed the rich flora, food, and beauty. Men fished and hunted, while women raised their children and harvested the crops. One summer, a terrible drought left the people with no food. The tribesmen had to travel great distances in order to bring their families sustenance. A darkness overtook the people and their land.
Itaki, chief of the tribe had to make a very difficult decision that would affect all members of the tribe. Sorrow filled their hearts, the birds stopped their singing and the animals left. Itaki’s beautiful daughter, Iaca learned she was to have a baby soon. But with the sacrifices her people had to make she knew she had to make a difference before her baby was born. She did, making an exotic discovery, one that exists to this day!
Montserrat Lehner is a beautiful woman. She is from Colombia and listening to her speak Spanish is like listening to music.  She speaks English beautifully and with a lovely accent. Her beauty is much more than skin deep though. She’s an outstanding teacher, an amazing artist and writer, and a model mother and wife. I can also testify that she is an awesome friend as well. One of my most prized possessions is a painting of Noah’s Ark that Montserrat painted for me and my first grade class. It's a favorite of every grade I teach! Her talent is extraordinary!
Montserrat’s book, which she authored and illustrated, grew out of her love for nature, her native culture and the stories of her youth. The Legend of the Acai is illustrated in the warm colors and tropical splendor of the Rainforest.
I’m a firm believer in teaching our children to value and preserve the environment and to appreciate other cultures; to learn the folklore, myths and legends of many people. I believe it ties all cultures together and helps us to understand and appreciate our neighbors around the world. This book accomplishes these goals.
I highly recommend this book to children, parents, grandparents, and teachers. It’s a wonderful read aloud and a story that children will want to read over and over. I’m also sure that you will enjoy it yourself as you read it!
