I’m worried; worried, dismayed and disappointed. I was raised in an America that was the envy of the rest of the world. We were respected by our allies and feared by our enemies. Our people could work hard and achieve a good, stable life for themselves and the promise of a better one for their children. It wasn’t just a myth; I know because I lived it!
As a child, I felt safe in my home, my school and my neighborhood. I could grow up to be whatever I wanted as long as I was willing to work hard and stay focused. I knew that my country would do whatever necessary to keep me free and protect me from danger, both foreign and domestic. Even through the Vietnam War, I was secure in the knowledge that we would overcome!
Children today have no such luxury. They worry about nuclear war, attacks on our homeland, terrorism and more. They don’t know if they’ll have the opportunity to go to college or even have a home with the economy the way it is. Will there be Social Security for them? Will there be jobs? Will there even be democracy as we know it for them?I read today that China is building the biggest and most advanced Rocket Launching Facility in the world. It has also stepped up its Space and Technology Program to the point that maybe we should all be a little worried. A report from the US Secretary of defense stated that “China's escalating expertise in space is also enhancing its competence as a global military force. Along with lofting future radar, ocean surveillance, and high-resolution photoreconnaissance satellites, China's rise as a space power also includes pursuit of an offensive anti-satellite system.” (Space.com)
So why are we cutting defense programs and scaling back on our Space Program? Do we really want to have to depend on Russia to “give us a lift” to the Space Station? Maybe I’m being naïve but I feel like we’re going to be like fish in a barrel, if you know what I mean. Am I the only one worried about the loss of respect and fear our country once inspired? Help me to understand what’s happening here! I’d love your comments and opinions on this matter. Am I being naïve? Am I misinformed? I’d be happy to learn that I am both!
I am with you Marion. It scares me to think what USA will be like for my children and their children.
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't EVERYONE worried about this? More importantly, why aren't politicians listening to the voters?
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how we vote these people into office and yet they do not want to hear what matters most to us.
ReplyDeleteWell, I won't live in fear. We survived the Cold War- remember fallout shelters in school basements and hospitals? Scary stuff, then.
ReplyDeleteI don't want Americans to become so fearful we lose sight of what goals we want to accomplish. A private company can get a contract worth millions and millions (of our taxpayer dollars) for x-ray machines (sans radiation badges for the TSA) at airports when it was just shown that a government agent was able to get through with a gun tucked in her panties. Sigh.
Millions that could have been used for space research and moving forward.
Do I feel concern about what is the future for our children and grandchildren? Yes. I want them to have affordable access to health care, jobs, clean food and water and yes, safety.
Again, as always, wonderful post, Marion!
Thanks Nina, and as usual, you make a lot of sense!Keep the comments coming!
