ALASKAN PIPE DREAMS

Marion Pellicano Ambrose

Alaska: America’s rugged frontier! Whether it’s because of a cruise, the energy crisis, or
Sarah Palin, everyone is talking about Alaska these days. I’m no exception. Something
about this far off place intrigues me. I’m in love with what I’ve seen of the rugged
beauty, the abundant wildlife and the unique native cultures.

Everything in Alaska is so big; big bears, big moose, glaciers, whales and landscape. The
immense vastness of it makes you feel small and filled with awe. Images of cruising
through Glacier Bay or exploring Denali National Park fill my dreams. I’m scaling
Mt. McKinley, the continents highest peak in a vast, unspoiled wilderness surrounded
by caribou, wolves, and sheep or finding flowers and plant life such as jewelweed or
salmonberry. This is what draws me, the diversity of life in what most people envision as
a frozen wasteland.

I’m also a history buff, so I would love to see the picturesque towns and hear the tales
of the old gold rush days. I’d love to see native artisans and explore the great artwork
and craftsmanship of the natives of the Northwest! I’m curious to see how the modern
conveniences of daily life have changed the ways of life in secluded areas. There’s just
so much to explore and experience! I hope to cruise Alaska with my husband for our 25th
anniversary (if the economy picks up). I know it will be the experience of a lifetime.

As my favorite naturalist, John Muir said:
“To the lover of wilderness, Alaska is one of the most wonderful countries in the world. “
