WICKED HIGH TAXES

Dawn Boyle

A recent study has revealed that Nassau County, New York has the highest taxes in the nation. The study done by the Tax Foundation found that the median Nassau taxpayer shells out about $8,400 a year in property taxes. Suffolk County, New York is 12th on the list with the average taxpayer shelling out about $7,000. Officials say the amount is so high because the biggest factor is school taxes.

Are they trying to drive us off the Island?

My monthly mortgage payment is $3,200.00 for a 1,200 square foot 3 bedroom 2 bath split. I sit on a postage stamp of parcel at 80'x100'. It costs my family of four on average $170. a week in groceries, $160 a month for cable/internet, $200 for four cell phones, $200 a month for car insurance on our two vehicles, $100 for water every three months, $38 a month for garbage pick up, $360 a month for LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) and National Grid. Our extras are $135 for life insurance, $300 for a car lease, $170 a month for drama $200 for miscellaneous credit cards. That totals over $5,800 and we have not left the house yet.

How are people going to survive with tax increases, the price of gas sky rocketing and job layoffs? The amount of taxes we pay each year for the school is insane, but for some reason our teachers have to request classroom necessities 3 times a year for both my children. Programs are getting cut left and right but there is some idiot we all voted into office working three days a month and getting paid $100,000 a year.

It's time to wake up! We need to do something and do it fast! Stop helping foreign countries and help our own NOW! I have at least two friends who's homes are in foreclosure, they are hard working families who can not catch a break. Oh and by the way...my taxes are higher then $8,400 by about $2,000. If you think about how many people are paying $10,000 a year in property taxes it is mind blowing!  I should be living in a ocean front mansion...not the closet I call home.

Check out today's blog wherein our tax paying dollars were hard at work!

  2. MOVE? I love where I live, I have no desire to move. I don't think that I should be paying $10,000 a year in property taxes - DO YOU? What do you think $10,000 a year should give me? I bet you are either not paying anywhere near what I am OR you got your house from your Mommy or Grandpa :)

I don't personally have 4 cell phones, I am talking about my family.

What can be done Anonymous? Fill us tax paying New Yorkers in!

  5. Different anonymous here. Taxes are too high sure, but they aren't going down. There isn't a solution if that was your question. You can cut back in other areas - dining out, etc.

Why do grade school kids need phones????????????????????????
It's bad enough seeing every teenage kid with head down, glued to their iphone, BB, texting every 5 seconds, checking FB, email... and you want to start this process at age 7?

  7. @ Different Anonymous...what works for me may not work for you. Us deciding to give our children cell phones was a decision made like some decide to let their children ride to a park or store. It's up to the individual parent...my children are only allowed to use their phones when necessary. They are not permitted to bring them to class, out to eat (unless they are out with others) or to family functions. If they break the rules it gets taken away. NOW BACK TO THE TAX ISSUE!

I understand we are not going to wake up one day and my property taxes will be drastically lower, not my point...I am wondering why we are allowing increases to happen, why did Albany take back so much aid from us when we are basically footing the bill.

On to cutting back...I cook EVERY night, we rarely go out to dine. I have eleminted my newspaper delivery and went back to basic cable. I have argued my interest rates down on the two credit cards we use and I have cut back on needless driving. I use coupons and check circulars for sales. I will only shop for clothes when there is a sale and I have at least a 20% off coupon. I am working it....I wish I could say the same for our govenment!

  9. Amen to working it Dawn. Coupons and cutting back are commonplace to most. (Today - I have haircut guilt!) ;/ Every penny has to stretch. It's just harder and harder to avoid the snap back... everything goes up up up, except salaries - and how many people have seen those cut. Yet those that govern don't get pinched the same way. I'm all for helping others but I do agree that you need to take care of your own back yard first.

  10. Ooooh, I love a good sparring match.. Dawn, you are 100% correct. Although I love it here too, it's gotten incredibly difficult to just pay the basic bills - there's little left for any extras, despite two incomes. When I saw that article today it made me sad because I have lived here almost all my life and I don't want to leave, though I do dream of moving to a nice little cul-de-sac down south.. but that's not going to happen. And I certainly don't have anyone leaving me a big inheritance, or a house..

  12. I gave up trying to understand Uncle Sams logic when it comes to taxes. The harder I work, the more I pay. When will I get a break?
