His eyes locked on her, taking in the droplets hanging in the hair that caught the light and reflected like diamonds dancing around her. She could feel herself shaking inside. His touch, his kiss, leaving her feeling weak and slightly faint. It was incomprehensible. Them being so in sync. Feelings so in unison. After scads of time had escaped them. After their lives had ceased to be merged in any way, shape, or form for years. Studying him, she dared to fathom and acknowledge that he was still the one. Still the one that she dreamed of - the one, a part of her heart had always continued to love. She knew a part of her heart would forever belong to him.
In the gentle drizzle, the moonlight fell on the cityscape of buildings beyond the bridge where it slipped through the shroud of clouds. Darting in and out across the distance like the impassioned feelings chasing across the immediate atmosphere between them. Words eluded them as their eyes flitted across each other’s silhouettes as if to memorize the face before them. Every meeting glance leaving them more entranced between the recollection of abundant memories and the reality that stood before them. A reality theirs for the taking at this moment if they melted into this instant and lost control. All she had always waited for stared back at her. She saw before her every dream that she had longed to come true. Her eyes fell closed under the overwhelming intensity of it all, as the voice in her head wished for this night to never end.
Thoughts rushed in. Memories took over....
... At twenty-something an empty house offered great opportunity. Even more when it was known no one would be home through the weekend. There she was across a coffee table from him. Watching skillful hands shuffle and toss the deck before dealing. Listening to the crack and whoosh of the cards, her heart was tangled and she felt weak imagining what this game of poker would gamble. It could cost her the best friend and confidant that meant everything. It could give her the rest of her life. She was prepared to play. Prepared to surrender to fate. Knowing the winner took all. A few hands later she watched him, sexy, shirtless, and missing miscellaneous parts of his attire. Not being able to hide the thrill of winning - and this evening, in this game, they had agreed the winner held all the cards. A sly siren’s smile lit up her face. She bit her bottom lip as she took in the view of her hand. Odds were good she’s keep winning. Odds were she’d stay the night. Win or lose she desired, longed to go to the next level. Odds were good that nothing between them would ever be the same. A private game of strip poker bridging the friendship to the long awaited fantasy. In almost disbelief he slapped his lousy hand on the table. He hadn’t been prepared to lose. Nor did he know that she had already decided either way he’d win.
A slightly nervous laugh accompanied the announcement, “You win - AGAIN!” His lack of clothing proving it to be game over.
“I’m out, you win.”
“Winner takes all.” She giggled and grinned leaning in to meet his lips.
Her pulse raced when she felt his heart under her hands racing like thunder. There was no doubt in her mind, he wanted this as much as she did. His shoulders loosened and she melted into his embrace as hands roamed and the kisses intensified. Leveling the playing field he gently worked to free her from her clingy sweater. The feel of his hands on her bare skin made them both breathless when their lips parted for air. As they leaned towards the floor to take on the advantages of a full recline she about jumped out of her skin when there was a loud and urgent banging on the door. A voice called his name followed by “Let me in, I need to crash!” Scrambling for clothes he sheltered her out of site, motioning to be quiet and wait. He exchanged “words” with the black sheep brother. Voices tense and elevated followed by a clumsy and loud ascend up the stairs.
The dim light fell over him as he moved towards her. His eyes already said it all. Game over. She fought back the welling tears, silently praying he wouldn’t see them in the dark, before he even spoke, “I’m so sorry”!
He tried to smile, but his frustration was evident. “Raincheck! You’ve got to go.”
Almost pleading, “Come with me. Let’s go out.”
Barely a whisper, as his lips brushed her forehead, “I can’t”.
She admired his loyalty to family, even a brother with whom there was no love lost, but her heart broke a little as he walked her to the door.
“Come with me.” He wanted to, even stepped through the doorway with her. But then heard scuffling from beyond the stairwell. Disappointment staring back a her, “I’ll call you...” He turned and disappeared into the darkness, the screen door slammed shut. Tears blurring the streetlights, her steps quickening as she reached the car. Her heart hurt. She had had every intention to give herself to him that night. It was supposed to happen. And, now... she drove home, painfully alone...
...They had driven the winding roads taking in the sights and talking endlessly and effortlessly for what seemed like hours. The landscape opened up ahead of them revealing the sight of the Sound. The gravel cracked and popped under the tires of the blue pick up as he parked just so they could take in the rocky beach of the north shore. The sky was ebony and dotted with diamonds. Once the parking break was secured he pulled her closer. She straddled the stick and fell into him melding to his chest and relaxing her head onto his strong shoulders. She felt so at ease. So safe in his arms. Their breath in unison as they listened to the sounds of the water break on the rocks and watched a storm roll in from the north sky. Flashes of lightening creating moments of daylight that engraved the picturesque place in their minds. Conversation, laughter and kisses filled up the time as the clouds rolled in. The rain fell rhythmically on the metal roof. It was a mesmerizing sound. The cab filled with sexual sparks ready to combust. His hands danced unconsciously over her chest and hips as she met the intensity of his passionate kisses. Her hands roaming higher on his thighs, she noticed his muscles tighten and the jeans became increasingly snug under the rise of passion. Both of them aware of the flush of heat and moisture mounting uncontrollably between her legs. When their eyes met between long sensuously steamy kisses she was transfixed on him. In so many ways he was her everything. A low sexy moan escaped her as she envisioned giving him all that she was. The scent of her skin filled him with a rush as she breathed out and he breathed in. With a spellbound gaze he backed her across the bench. The silence was so still. So loud. Their panting breath and the rain on the rooftop echoed in their ears. The mounting desire for ecstasy between them was so intoxicating that she trembled at his touch as they relinquished control and allowed this long awaited moment to unfold. Legs tangled and pressed together as they contorted the challenges of the cab’s confines and fought to remove clothing piece by piece. His smooth lips traveling the landscape of her curves when a strange light flooded the dash and a rap on the drivers side window jared them instantly to reality. Simultaneously covering her with his jacket and rolling down the window. The officer peered the flashlight in further.
The windows steamed beyond vision, the cop questioned, “Are you okay, miss?”
Shakily her voice betrayed her, “Yes, Officer, I’m fine”.
He then asked her for ID as well. After examination, the lawman handed back all the identification, stating, “Although you are consenting adults, you are on private property...” the voice trailed off as the engine turned over. Once again so close - yet so far away...

Ray Embrey: What are you saying? Are you saying you two are fated to be together?
Mary Embrey: I've lived for a very long time, Ray. And the one thing I've learned: Fate doesn't decide everything. People get to choose...
